Adhesion Promotion 

A firm bond 

In many applications, it is becoming increasingly common to glue materials together instead of connecting them mechanically by screwing, welding or riveting.  

Powerful adhesives and sealants are therefore in great demand in the areas of construction, transport and electronics or in DIY stores. When silanes are used in the formulation as adhesion promoters, they play a key role in ensuring that the bonded connection withstands even great stresses, water immersions or other loads. 

Finding the right silane 

The task of adhesives is to permanently connect materials via their surfaces. Here, special organofunctional silanes from the Dynasylan® portfolio act as adhesion promoters, which create a molecular bridge between the adhesive and inorganic substrates. The hydrolysable silicon functionalities create good adhesion to inorganic surfaces  such as metals or glass, while the organofunctional group of the Dynasylan® grades can react with organic surfaces as well as with the adhesives and sealants and thus guarantee especially strong adhesion. 

Dynasylan® grades can be used in primers but to avoid an additional treatment step in the application the usage as an additive in the final adhesives and sealants is preferred. When used as an additive in adhesives and sealants, the silane is usually added when manufacturing the end product. It is important to check in advance that the silane used is compatible with the other components of the formulation, such as resins, inorganic fillers, pigments, or other additives. 

Better adhesion on difficult substrates 

Adhesion can present a challenge on difficult substrates such as plastic or metal, or in very moist environments. Especially powerful adhesives are also required when strong adhesion must be achieved quickly.  

In such cases, it is also possible to apply special Dynasylan® adhesion promoters such as Dynasylan® 1146, VPS SIVO 260 or VPS SIVO 280 in the adhesives and sealants to improve the adhesion performance. Evonik offers here a wide range of excellent adhesion promoters to fulfill the adhesion targets on different substrates. Besides a broad adhesion spectrum and good compatibility, the Dynasylan® portfolio offers also special solutions to reduce VOC forming, advantages in labeling, improve color stability, and additional advantages in compatibility, mechanical properties, and durability.  

To guarantee good adhesion and prevent premature curing, it is crucial to select the right adhesion promoter. The better the compatibility of the silane with the polymer type used, the better the physical properties of the adhesive.
