Drying

Dynasylan® VTMO works as moisture scavenger

Moisture-curing adhesives and sealants may crosslink prematurely. Therefore, they must be protected from moisture before processing. However, moisture can occur during production, filling, and storage, and fillers or other raw materials used can also contain residual moisture.

Vinylsilane reacts with water very quickly

Dynasylan® VTMO acts as a water scavenger both in the production process and during the storage of adhesives and sealants prior to application. This enables the production of storage-stable SMP and silicone products with the required shelf life.

Vinyl silanes such as Dynasylan® VTMO tend to hydrolyze quickly. Since Dynasylan® VTMO reacts faster with water than the moisture-curing polymers used, they are used as drying agents (water scavengers) in moisture-curing SMP and, in some cases, silicone systems. Even the most minute traces of moisture are thus eliminated. In this way, Dynasylan VTMO protects the polymers used from pre-curing. .

Better storage stability of the adhesive or sealant

At the same time, the drying properties of the silane also improve the storage stability of the adhesive or sealant by absorbing water from the environment.

Moreover, Dynasylan® VTMO improves adhesion strength in wet conditions and resistance to abrasion. This reaction also takes place when the formulation contains further silanes. Besides Dynasylan® VTMO Evonik offers further products as moisture scavengers

Custom solutions from the silane experts

The drying agent is subject to additional requirements depending on the end application, e.g., a high flash point or low volatility. In such cases, Dynasylan® 6490, an oligomeric and environmentally friendly drying agent from the Evonik portfolio, is recommended.

Evonik’s silane experts continuously enhance their products: Depending on the respective requirement, they develop new custom solutions together with customers to ensure that the adhesive or sealant is durable even under challenging conditions.

The benefits at a glance:

  • Prevents premature crosslinking during the manufacture and storage of adhesives and sealants
  • Improves the storage properties of adhesives and sealants
  • Better adhesion and mechanical properties
  • Longer shelf life
